New 澳门新葡京官网 students to serve community

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--More than 400 Birmingham-Southern College students, 澳门新葡京官网 President Linda Flaherty-Goldsmith, and several staff members will participate in service projects around the Birmingham area on Tuesday, Aug. 23 as the last step of New Student Orientation.

Twenty-nine teams, comprised mainly of new and returning students, will spend the morning working at a range of parks, nonprofit organizations, and agencies across the metro area, including the Exceptional Foundation, Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, Urban Ministry, Girls Inc., the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, and a Habitat for Humanity building site.

The day of service before classes begin on Wednesday has become a tradition at 澳门新葡京官网. “The goal is to introduce incoming students to their new hometown and connect them with community partners,” said Kristin Harper ’92, director of the Bunting Center for Engaged Study and Community Action.

Students will gather with their Orientation teams at Munger Auditorium on the 澳门新葡京官网 campus at 8:30 a.m. and depart by bus to their service sites at 9 a.m. The groups will gather at Railroad Park at 12:30 p.m. for lunch and a discussion about their experience before returning to campus.
